The Spirit Is upon You to Do What Jesus Did

From Called to Conquer by Bishop Eddie Long

Scripture Reading: Luke 4:18–19
Key Verse: Luke 4:18

The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed.

The gospel is the “good news” of God’s plan in Christ for those who listen and obey Him to actively rule and reign with Him.

The church is the workforce God charged to implement this plan. The Chief Executive Officer is the Holy Ghost. Jesus said, “The Spirit of the Lord . . . has anointed Me / To preach the gospel to the poor.” What kind of good news should the poor hear? They do not need to learn how to speak in tongues, shout, or do a little dance. Jesus did not tell the poor of His day how to join a choir or usher board. He told them how to leave their poverty behind and become rulers in God’s kingdom! You are anointed to spread the same message to the same people!

Lord, where I am poor You have made me rich. Where I have been a slave, You have made me a king. Grant me the courage to invade the darkness of my neighbor’s bondage with the light of Your good news. It is time to set even more captives free so they can rule in Your name.
